1975 saw the beginnings of Hustle in its infancy. Funkadelic music along with Santana was the " it's happening" thing. We would do a three step. One step to the left and two steps to the right, while holding our partners hands in a rocking left and rocking to the right motion. We would dance to the sounds of Parliament. You were considered a God if you could do a turn. In 1977, I remember going out to see "Saturday Night Fever". The lines would literally wrap around the theater. One night, I had gone to the Carbon Copy in La Puente to watch a dance contest. I saw this couple dancing a very dramatic choreographed dance routine, as portrayed by John Tralvolta and his partner in the SNF movie. I asked the dancer named Lloyd Sharaga were he learned how to dance. Lloyd said he took lessons from some guy. I asked Lloyd if he would give me lessons. Lloyd said "no". I asked Lloyd the name of the person that taught him how to dance. Lloyd said his name is Roy Madrid. Roy Madrid was a movie dance choreographer along with Danny Terio of the TV show Dance Fever. I told Lloyd that if he wouldn't teach me, then I would go to Roy Madrid. I started to walk away and he grabbed my arm and said, "I will teach you". The dance he taught me was a variation of swing and the Latin Hustle. I literally have learned to dance from various instructors who came from New York or Miami to teach us how to hustle. I was the master of ceremonies for many great contests at the Pantera Rosa and the Turning Point. I met many great dancers who latter appeared on Dance Fever. Hustle music is the dance partner to Hustle dancing. Together they unite to touch our soul. I can only compare the feeling to watching Fred Astare and Ginger Rogers floating around the dance floor to a song rendition of " I'm in heaven...I'm in Heaven". I was there in the old "back in the day", but let me tell you the new Disco Revolution Evolution is pretty damn exciting in its own way. Years from now we will be talking about the old days at the Mexican Cafe, Scribbles, The Lodge, Circus and QC's Disco Legends. As my friend Larry says, "We are passing the torch on to a new generation". To all the gate keepers and key masters of Disco, I say, "Keep the torch burning & don't let it burn out". We the 40,50 & 60 somethings will continue to do our part. I feel fuzzy that we have a solid foundation of great individuals to keep the legacy of Disco alive.
Our youth will be served and old school gate keepers will be remembered in the stories we pass on to our youth.

My motivation to write this story was inspired by my good friend Joe Midnight Desire, who wrote an excellent article on Latin Hustle and New York Hustle. Please look for his article on all the websites...it is excellent!

Blondie,

At a point when Hustle was busting out on to the scene in 1978, I was a wallflower. I would dress good and though I didn't look to bad in my twenties, girls did not want to hang with a guy that just held up the wall. I was told by women, "Well it's just that you don't know how to dance, and I like guys that dress in suits." Well the suits.. I could buy, as for the dancing, I found someone to teach me. Seriously, it is very easy to learn with the proper instruction. Sylvia is very good at teaching the women's step. You and your hubby could learn in no time at all. Very soon, we will be making an announcement to hold dance lessons. We will probably start privately and later expand publicly. I have already had some offers. I want to do it right. Timing is everything.

Take Care,

Rude Dawg

Best way to learn is get alittle tipsy.  Well just a wee bit so you can loosen up and feel more comfy.  If you can feel the music flow through your body and be able to shake dat booty, then it's very easy to learn.

Oh and as long as a guy is a good dancer, it really doesn't matter what he is wearing or what he looks like.

So where's the sign up list for these eager folks?

witch turning to a frog animated gifHi Blondie,

I use to feel like a wizzard till I turned into a frog. I decided to take lessons and now i feel like a frog that's on fire. Great, I will let you know when we start the lessons. Yes, I recall that Raphael is a pretty good Hustler.
