I have some time to spare since we are waiting for traffic to die down before we hit the desert (Glamis, dirt bikes, quads and social drinking), for the weekend. This is how a bunch of old veterans celebrate Memorial Day. I happened to be in La Puente today (job related) and I was on Glendora Ave, so I decided to drive by “The Center”. When I saw the building from the outside it looked somewhat different that it did the last time I saw it some 24 years ago. It had some new structures, and other add-ons around it. When I walked inside the center it all came back. I walked up on the stoop on the left side, (east side) up above the dance floor next to the planters where we use to check everyone out from. It looked different, but the same. I know that sounds weird, but I can’t explain it. As I gazed out into the dance floor and looked across to the stage, I imaged the DJs up on the stage cranking away the music, with their light shows flashing and blinking to the beat. I even stared across over to the right side of the room (west side, gym side) where all the “homies” use to hold up the wall. Funny, now that I remember my sister use to hang out on that side. I think the last time I went was when my cousin and his friends DJed (Enchanment) there in 81. That same night we got kicked out for asking some under cover security guy for a “light”. Luckily for my partners every thing was left on the dance floor on the escort to the door. The gym where we played B-Ball was still their. Come to think about it, we also got thrown out of their too for fighting. No we didn’t play B-ball on Wednesday nights, but we did shoot pool their and play B-ball their on other evenings. I bet most people that didn’t live in the area didn’t know about that. Not that I lived in the area but my cousin did. I spent many of my Wednesday nights (from 79-81) their followed by In-Out and then later the “Carousal”. My wife and I grew up and fell in love at “the Center” maybe I will take her there for our upcoming 25th anniversary. I know, I have to take her somewhere really nice too. I guess next time I am in Pico Rivera, I will swing by the “Carousal” and relive those memories. ( I got thrown out of their too, but never from anywhere else)
Wow, I can’t believe I wrote this much, and I got a “D” in English.
PS. I do not know if my cousins and his friends DJ called “Enchantment” back in 78-81 is the same Enchantment that played later on after I left the scene in 81. So know disrespect intended to any DJs.
Well I have to load up the equipment. Hope to be back before Sunday Night for Scribbles.
Hey Louie! That's a cool memory! I used to live in Walnut but right on the border of La Puente, and W. Covina but it wasn't until 1986 that we moved there so I never heard of "The Center"...wish I had!! I especially like the part that you met your wifey there...how sweet!
How about Mr. J's in El Monte? Any of you remember that place? I remember seeing Tyrants in Therapy and a few other "High Energy" Disco groups there like... I forgot her name but she sang that song "Your Playing with Love"... FUN FUN FUN!!! Those were my earlier party days with the fake id times though!! In fact the only place that didn't let me in with my fake id was QC's!!! LOL!!! What an embarassing moment that was!
